How To Use F1 to F12 Keys For Time-Saving Shortcuts

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m certainly no tech expert. When my computer starts acting up, I usually react by panicking and waiting for someone else to fix the issue. So on that note, I’ve never known what the purpose of the F1 to F12 keys on my computer’s keyboard is. If you, too, are unsure of these keys’ functions, we’re about to enlighten you!

F1

This key is used for “help.” If you use Windows OS and want the help of a program you’re using, the F1 key will open up the help window.

F2

F2 is used to rename selected files and folders. This shortcut works in all versions of Windows.

F3

Pressing shift + F3 will change the content in Microsoft Word from upper to lower case letters at the start of each section.

F4

In Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer, F4 will open the location bar. Pressing control + F4 will also close the current window open.

F5

Pressing F5 will refresh the page or entire desktop.

F6

Pressing F6 will move the cursor in the location bar. Control + shift + F6 will also open a document in Microsoft Word.

F7

You can use F7 to check the spelling and grammar in documents in programs like Microsoft Word and Outlook.

F8

Pressing the F8 key will make your PC enter safe mode while rebooting.

F9

This key doesn’t really have a purpose in Windows, but is often used in design programs like AutoCAD.

F10

Pressing F10 will activate the menu in the organizer window. Pressing shift + F10 is the same as doing a right mouse click.

F11

Pressing F11 works in any type of browser and will cause the window to enter full-screen mode.

F12

In Microsoft Word, pressing F12 will open the “save as” prompt. Shift + F12 will save a document in Microsoft Word, and pressing control + shift + F12 will print a document.
