This year, it’s my wife’s turn to host Thanksgiving. She’s a dedicated vegan and never compromises on her principles. Yesterday, she held a trial dinner to test the dishes she plans to serve to the whole family and invited my parents. Of course, she prepared an entirely vegan meal with no meat or added fats.
When my parents realized there wouldn’t be any meat on the table, they were clearly disappointed. They tasted the food but quickly announced they were leaving. They told my wife that if she didn’t change the menu, no one else would come for Thanksgiving either. My wife was deeply hurt; she had looked forward to hosting and sharing her vegan dishes to show that plant-based food can be delicious and satisfying.
Now, I’m truly conflicted. I understand her excitement to finally host and share her lifestyle, but I also get why my parents feel Thanksgiving isn’t the same without traditional dishes. I’m not sure whose side to take in this situation. What should I do? How can I support my wife while also addressing my parents’ concerns?
